ANTIOXIDANTS — Why Do We Need Them?
Share
We need plenty of antioxidants!
But why? The reason is oxidative stress...
What is it, where does it come from, and how can we defend against it? Don’t worry — we’ll explain.
Oxidative stress begins with the development of free radicals in our bodies. These are formed as a byproduct of cellular metabolism or due to external factors such as:
🌞 sun exposure
🏙️ air pollution
🚬 smoking
🌾 pesticides
The problem arises when there are too many free radicals, and the balance between damaging free radicals and repairing antioxidants is disrupted. This imbalance leads to premature cell aging, a range of unwanted side effects, and increases the risk of many diseases.
So what can you do?
Avoid unnecessary oxidation and increase the antioxidants in your body!
Oxidation increases when we’re exposed to stress, toxins (from air and environment), and infections.
Avoid:
- processed foods
- sugar
- chemicals in food and cosmetics
- cigarettes
- exhaust fumes
- plastic
The more you reduce these, the better. Instead:
- choose healthy, organic food
- take care of your gut health
- make time for daily de-stressing activities: exercise, meditation, walks, laughter, talking with a friend.
Since it’s impossible to avoid all toxins or stress, it’s just as important to increase your antioxidant levels.
These are molecules that stabilize and neutralize free radicals in the body.
What can you do?
✅ Support your body's own antioxidant production (e.g. glutathione)
✅ Include antioxidant-rich foods in your daily diet:
beets, kale, blackberries & blueberries, tomatoes, nuts & seeds, green tea, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, and mushrooms!
✅ Supplement with natural antioxidants:
- Astaxanthin
- Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinol)
- Selenium
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
Each offers a unique, full spectrum of benefits.
